The Bachelor of Medicine program is a fixed educational program with an option; not everyone who qualifies for admission gets a place at the university. The qualifying procedure consists of 2 rounds. Please read all information on this page carefully.
The total extraction capacity in Maastricht is determined annually; in 2023/24 there will be 366 students. Of the available training slots, 50 are reserved forMedical-clinical researcher of the master's program(Dutch A-KO) and there is a maximum of 60 seats availableBachelor of Medicine - English Course (BA MED). The remaining places are for the Dutch Bachelor of Medicine program.

General requirements: previous education
Admission requirements for the 2023-2024 academic year for the Bachelor of Medicine degree depend, among other things, on your previous education. See below which requirements apply to you.
Candidates with a Dutch diploma
If you hold one of the following degrees, you are generally eligible for admission.
- VWO diploma new style withNature and health profile(Science and Health)about the Physics profile
- VWO diploma new style withNature and technology profile(Science and technology)with profile theme Biology
- OU (Open University) Propedeuse Diploma, HBO Propedeuse Diploma, HBO Diploma, University Propedeuse Diploma or University Diploma. Sufficient knowledge at two levels in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics is required.
The old VWO diploma no longer grants admission.
Applicants with a degree other than Dutch
If you hold a non-Dutch diploma equivalent to a Dutch VWO diploma, you are in principle eligible for admission to this programme. Check the list of diplomas equivalent to the Dutch VWO diploma to see if this applies to your diploma.

If your degree is not on this list, Maastricht University (UM) will first determine if you are admissible.
Keep in mind that:this step will take longer, so it's important to apply early, preferably before November 1, 2022.
Please note: if you register after November 1, 2022, you run the risk that we may not be able to assess your suitability in a timely manner and/or that we may not be able to fully remedy one (or more) of your deficiencies in time. As a result, you may not be able to start your studies in the academic year 2023/24.
Additional requirements apply to applicants with a non-Dutch degree
- English "Certificate of General Qualification for University Admission":Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry: as "Grundkurs" up to the last year inclusive. Biology as "Leistungsfach"
- Belgian high school diploma:One of the courses: Greek Sciences, Latin Sciences, Modern Sciences, Mathematical Sciences
- Geneva International Baccalaureate:Mathematical Analysis and Approach HL or SL or Mathematical Applications and Interpretation HL; Physics and Chemistry SL or HL; HL biology
- European Baccalaureate:Mathematics: written or oral exams, at least 3 hours per week for the last 2 years; physics and chemistry: written or oral exams; Biology: Written or oral exams, at least 4 hours per week for the past 2 years
- VK A/AS-, (I) GCSE- en/of AICE-niveaus:Mathematics and Physics: GCE A or AS level; Chemistry and Biology: GCE A Level
Additional item requirement for prequalification in a language other than Dutch 2023-2024
If your diploma or degree deviates from the above, UM will assess whether you have mastered the four required subjects (mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology) sufficiently to qualify for an exemption (aptitude statement) for those items individually. This assessment is based on final VWO qualifications in the relevant discipline and national agreements of the Central Entrance Examination Commission (CCVX). The assessment requires extra time, so please apply as soon as possible, preferably beforeOctober 1, 2022.
Please note: if you apply after November 1, 2022, you run the risk that we may not be able to assess your eligibility in a timely manner and/or that you may have to cancel the final schedule due to one (or more) of your timing deficiencies. . As a result, you may not be able to start your studies in the academic year 2023/24.

Candidates who do not meet the previous and/or additional training requirements
If you already have or intend to obtain a VWO diploma or equivalent, but do not meet the additional requirements for the subjects of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and/or Mathematics, you must take a complementary exam. If you have to take an extra math exam, you can choose math A or B. These extra exams are organized byCCVX(Central Committee on Admissions Testing, em holandês: Central Committee on Admissions Testing) e/ouBoswell/Beta.Exams can be taken in English or Dutch.
Observation!If you intend to start your studies in the academic year 2023/24, you must submit the certificate of all compulsory subjects by 16:00 on January 15, 2023, at the latestLUBinclude a complete and detailed plan on how you will obtain the relevant certificates in your portfolio in a timely manner (deadline 23 Jan 2023, 2023, 16:00 CET).
Secondary school students who obtain their first Dutch secondary education (VWO) or one of the equivalent diplomas with the compulsory examination subjects explicitly mentioned above in mid-2023 will not be considered unsatisfactory. A diploma assessed individually by the Faculty of Medicine may show one or more professional deficiencies. Check your diploma and subject/profile combination in good time.
Requesting an aptitude check
Documentation must be prepared for admissibility testing by the colloquium doctum committee for each subject that requires a suitability check. If this applies to you, you will receive information about this in your MyApplication portal.
Entrance exam, interview
If you are not admitted because you do not have the required diploma and you are over 21 when you start your studies, you can take a special entrance exam, the so-called Colloquium Doctum.
The Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) of the Faculty of Medicine does not organize colloquium doctum tests, but can issue a colloquium doctum certificate. To qualify for the Colloquium Doctum certificate, you must demonstrate proficiency in English, physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics at pre-university level.
After presenting a certificate of competence in these subjects (viasc-ba-fhml@maastrichtuniversity.nl), will obtain the Colloquium Doctum certificate. With this certificate, you can demonstrate that you meet the requirements for prior training and/or additional training of the UM Medical Degree program.

Please answer the language requirements questions in the "Language Requirements for the Bachelor of Medicine - English Course (BA MED)" section of this website to find out if you need to provide any additional documentation. The result of your answers will indicate which documents you can use to prove your proficiency. - Proof of proficiency in required subjects(mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology)
If any of the required items are missing, you must demonstrate through certification that you have sufficient knowledge to address this deficiency.
If you are eligible for a suitability test, you must prepare documentation for an admissibility test by the colloquium doctum committee for each component that requires a suitability test. - If you do not (yet) meet the requirements of your previous education, you have one or more disabilities. UM first assesses whether your previous education is admissible. Therefore, it is very important that you check in advance that you meet the requirements.
Selection process
If you are eligible for admission, you can proceed with the selection and registration process.

The selection process consists of two steps:
first round
The selection committee evaluates the submitted portfolio, the annex to the portfolio and the homework. See the document below for more information on the first round procedure. ABOUTFebruary 10, 2023, you will be notified by email if you have been invited to the selection day.

second round
You come to MaastrichtFebruary 25, 2023on the day of selection. You will be asked to perform several tasks that test your (inter)personal and non-cognitive skills.
If applicable, the Selection Committee will evaluate the submitted "Specified Elimination Schedule" document. See the document below for more information on the second round procedure.
Procedure 2nd phase of selection Degree in Medicine - academic year 2023/24
Judgment
The selection committee develops a ranking based on the selection process. This rating is sent to Studielink. ABOUTApril 15, 2023, you will be informed about your rank number. Studylink will issue internship certificates.
Keep in mind that:depending on the COVID-19 infections and measures, decisions may be made to adjust the selection procedure. Applicants will be informed of the changes.
Keep in mind that:receipt of the internship certificate cannot be considered as official proof of admission to the Bachelor of Medicine program at Maastricht University (UM). UM first verifies that you meet all (additional) admission and application requirements on time.
You must redeem proof of placement at Studielink within two weeks. If you don't do it in time, you will lose the place you've been offered.
Study counseling at the end of the first year of study
At the end of the first year of study, each student receives advice on further studies. This advice is not binding. However, the student must obtain a predetermined number of credits to be admitted to the second year of study. The number of credits to be obtained is defined in the Teaching and Examinations Regulation (REA) of each course.

Selective bachelor's programmes
For a number of bachelor's programmes, UM strives to select students with a profound interest in one or more specific topics by a certain level of motivation. A wide range of criteria are used to determine the compatibility between your interests and the bachelor's programme.
Grading system
Dutch grades are awarded on a scale from 1 to 10. Grades from 1 to 5.4 (Bachelor)/ 5.9 (Master's) indicate a FAIL. Grades from 5.5 (Bachelor)/6.0 (Master's) to 10 indicate a PASS.
International transfer requirements
Official or unofficial transcripts from your high school and college/university. A 2.0 cumulative GPA from a US institution or college OR 3.0 cumulative GPA from a USA high school is required for full admission.
